klamauk – or hullabaloo, in a good way
April 6, 2009
check out the music label klamauk (which basically means hullabaloo) from mainz, germany. founded by tilman schwarz, michael fluhr and karsten brommenschenkel in august 2008. the label focuses on techno and house (or as they’d describe it: microfunk) releases.
not only do i actually like the music but the guys running the show came up with a cool web device. because the first vinyl release was a black and white print with individual hand coloration from each artist the guys from klamauk wanted to keep the individual element to their releases alive even for mp3 cover art. the website was realized by euro rscg 4d in duesseldorf, germany.
design your cover at klamauk.net/digital and listen to their music at juno or itunes.
evident utensil video
April 5, 2009
visually pretty interesting video for “evident utensil” from “chairlift”, an american electro pop group which was founded 2006 in boulder, colorado. the three group members aaron pfenning (songwriting/vocals/electronics/guitar), caroline polachek (songwriting/vocals/tambourine/synthesizer) and patrick wimberly (drums/bass guitar/keyboard/production) are now based in new york.
after “bruises” was featured in the new ipod nano tv commercial in september 2008 the band promptly got written up everywhere.
there are still some things in print you can’t do in…
April 5, 2009
“Wallpaper* strives to keep its edge with guest eds and die-cuts
Print can still do lots of things you can’t do online, and one of the more striking and tactile techniques in the print designer’s armoury is die-cutting, writes John L. Walters. The October issue of Wallpaper*, out next Thursday (11 September), goes to town with some sculptural custom cuts – in a special sixteen-page section, and on one of the three alternative front covers. But they don’t appear to be the kind of gratuitous ‘paper porn’ you see in elaborate paper promotions, or in limited-edition laser-cut book art like Olafur Eliasson’s (admittedly rather beautiful) Your House. This is a mass-market mag with a print run of 200k, destined for your local newsagent.
We’ve not managed to get our hands on a copy yet, but these snaps show something of the way this labyrinth of die-cuts springs from the content provided by Zaha Hadid, one of three guest editors. (The other two are artist Louise Bourgeois and Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo.) Hadid’s reputation rested on two-dimensional work on paper (see ‘The architect as illustrator’ by Catherine Slessor, Eye no. 35 vol. 12) long before she built anything substantial, so it is no surprise to see her work in the medium of a magazine. (She contributed a limited edition cover to the May 2006 Wallpaper*, too.) The gatefold cover and cut pages represent Hadid’s Lotus, to be launched at the Venice Biennale next Friday (12 September).” via eye blog
mwm graphics

diversity and quality are two things coming to mind when i look at what matt w moore does professionally. he is a designer, illustrator and generally a creative mind i guess. and, it’s pretty hard to stand out these days where you can find pretty much everything over and over again, where the same thing with just a different name on the tag is only a mouse click away.
doesn’t happen that often that you find someone who does wallpapers, snowboards, art, packaging and other stuff with such a high quality level and unique style.
check out his site and work. mwm graphics
trash art
April 3, 2009
very graphic, like it. the italian artist moreno di trapani has created a unique installation in reaction to the garbage crisis in naples, italy. di trapani placed hundreds of stuffed garbage bags into an empty building in the northern city of tradate. the building facade overflows with the bags, which “ooze out of the windows and out of the doors; the garbage piles up on the balcony.”
trainloads of naples garbage (some of which had radioactivity levels eighty times the norm), collected by the italian army, have been shipped to hamburg, germany last year to be processed. love it.
let the germans process the trash.

the wild things
March 26, 2009
awesome! spike jonze turned the alltime bestseller childrens book “where the wild things are”, originally written and illustrated by maurice sendak, into a movie that’s supposed to come out this year.
who as a child didn’t love the book where a young boy is sent to his room without supper after he misbehaved. once in the room he enters an imaginary forest with monsters…
it’s going to be interesting to see how the director of “being john malkovich” and “jackass: the movie” interprets this tale. quite a jump but jonze is a fantastic director.
earth hour
March 25, 2009
tunr off your lights at home for an hour and support the earth hour.
“THIS YEAR, EARTH HOUR HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO THE WORLD’S FIRST GLOBAL ELECTION, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
EARTH HOUR BEGAN IN SYDNEY IN 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
IN 2009, EARTH HOUR IS BEING TAKEN TO THE NEXT LEVEL, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.”
