earth hour

March 25, 2009

tunr off your lights at home for an hour and support the earth hour.

“THIS YEAR, EARTH HOUR HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO THE WORLD’S FIRST GLOBAL ELECTION, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
EARTH HOUR BEGAN IN SYDNEY IN 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

IN 2009, EARTH HOUR IS BEING TAKEN TO THE NEXT LEVEL, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.”

it is a shame how the city of detroit has been run down and ruined. yves marchand and romain meffre captured the forgotten beauty of a once powerful and vibrant city.

looking at the photos you don’t know what to feel. there is something absolutely fascinating in those dilapidated structures. it makes you dream, you start thinking about the times when these places were filled with life. where are the people who once stood in the hallways, worked in those offices, lived in those houses and what are their memories? how was the very last moment before the doors were shut and locked.

the city had at it’s peak in the 50s a population of roughly 2 million. 50 years later it’s down to about 750 thousand – declining, with about 2000 people leaving the city area per month.

interesting website with writings on design and culture. it takes some time (as always if you have to read) to go through and get into their website but there is some good stuff on there. useful links and recommendations, need to get used to the first impression of text overload but once that settled it’s fun.

left or right brainer

October 11, 2007

if you want to know whether you are left or right brain oriented and what it means make the test on the news.com.au website and find out if you see the dancer spinning clockwise or anti-clockwise. tested it with friends and as impossible as it seems we saw it spinning different directions. one amongst us was able to see it either way.

a tiger ran out of my house, over the green grass, jumped over some random trash in the street and wasn’t seen ever again. it was my house-tiger and while waiting and thinking whether i’d let that biest back in the crib or not (if it comes back) i decided to post some interesting and inspiring stuff on this site.

are there any things really relevant to us or a majority of people living on this planet other than war, hunger, sex or climate change and pollution? are we able nowadays to influence a majority of people by a single piece of art, advertising, design, film or a photo? photos and film obviously do have sometimes the impact to change the world to make people think and get them going into a different direction but how about art for example? let’s see if i can find something over the course of the next 10 years.
